Typically, fear is more crippling than that which is feared. Rage is more maddening than that which enrages. Resentment is more corrosive than that which is resented. We are harmed far less by our enemies than by our feelings about them.

Hmmm India right now, unfortunately provides an excellent (can't think of a word without the positive connotations) counterexample, fear and hatred are actually real manifestations with terrible consequences. 😞

Yes. In this case the fear and hatred are still doing more harm than the object of the fear and hatred, but they are doing much more harm to the object rather than subject.

This sounds like the original Stoic philosophy of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. A very wise and admirable philosophy.

Let me ask you this. Am i harmed more by the feelings toward the 2 men who beat my partner to death, or the death of my partner?

Maybe sometimes. If someone is enraging you and causing resentment, it just might be because they are toxic people who spread pain through callous dismissal of the pain they cause, just like you just now dismissed the exact emotions of trauma victims.

I'm not saying you're toxic. I'm saying that may be an insensitive statement.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
