Is "The Shining" the best directed film of all time? It's not my favorite film. And, in fact, the story is pretty lackluster. But boy did Kubrick direct the hell out of it.

This seems to correlate with theme. The movie is not scary because of what can't be seen (as typical). It's scary because of what can be seen (the boy's ability).
