Nothing in this world will ever betray you, apart from your expectations.

This is why betrayal by one’s mother is among the most wounding. Few of us are capable of letting go of expectations with regards to our own mother.

I don't see how this fits in with the original tweet though. Your tweet indicates your mother can betray (which is true!), and the original tweet claims that can't be the case. Ftr, I'm not criticizing your tweet - its the original that's meaningless.

I can't comment on Mart's tweet personally, but if a mother "betrays" her son, it was always in her nature to do so. The only real departure was from the son's expectations.

Why would it be a "departure" for the son if not the mother? It would obviously be in the "nature" of the son to set those expectations too.

Whatever actions were taken by the mother, they would have been in accord with her nature. If the son knew this nature, he couldn't be betrayed—he would expect it. He could therefore only be betrayed by false expectations.

      1. The definition of "betrayal" still fits even if said betrayal is expected. 2. If the son doesn't know, then it's still absolutely true that the mother betrayed him, even if you can also say that he was "betrayed by his expectations." Both are clearly true statements.

No Kevin, betrayal is an act of treachery. Someone cannot betray you if you have no trust in them in the first place.

I mean you can define terms however you want for your usage, but you ignored 2. If you do trust someone, then clearly they can betray you, even by your strict definition, and it's absolutely correct to describe it as them betraying you.

The point is that in such a case it is not *really* the person who is betraying you; the real culprit is your expectations, regardless of what *you* choose to see it as.

I only recently, at 55, discovered via my genome, that I trust people less than average (ones genome can actually tell you this). As a result I’ve always tested people and they’ve often come up short. I’m all too aware that seeds of betrayal were likely sown by this.

It *is* *really* the person who is betraying you, as I've said. Just saying it's not isn't helpful. If you trust someone, and they betray that trust, then they betrayed you. Even if it's also true to make the boring observation that "your expectations betrayed you."

And even if you don't trust them, they can betray you. Let's say your spouse cheats on you - they betrayed you, the marriage etc. even if you had learned to not trust them beforehand.
