Absolutely true. Confirmation bias playing a key role. But there are also digital hordes frenetically purveying misinformation for their ends.
Never in history has it been this difficult to separate the signal from the noise. The data in our day to day communications is now so noisy, that in our effort to mange it we tend to overfit and overreact - rather than balance with curiosity and skepticism.
It can only get more vicious, the equilibrium of this system lies only in perfect separation.
