Many claim that leftists hate the West, but I think most leftists criticize the West so much because they hold it to a higher standard. Likewise, I criticize the left more than the right—not because I believe in the left less than in the right, but because I believe in it more.https://twitter.com/shadihamid/status/1214748892060880898 …

I shouldn't be surprised, but it's sort of amazing to me how many Americans (on Twitter) seem to think America is a uniquely evil force in world affairs. Is it a white privilege thing? I don't know. But at some point it devolves from well deserved self-critique into pathology

But that's the problem. We shouldn't hold the left (nor America, nor the West) to a higher standard, since that which we deem universally good isn't exclusive to those groups. That sentiment results in excusing bad ideas & behavior.

Yes, there's the whole problem of the soft bigotry of low expectations, which many leftists are guilty of. But I think disparities in standards are ultimately unavoidable for humans; everyone favours their own friends and families over strangers, for instance.

I have to disagree that it's unavoidable. If your aunt is a drug addict, you can't possibly hold her to a higher standard than a stranger who isn't. This why people often become estranged from families--differing values & circumstances.

You'd likely see a drug-addicted aunt as more redeemable than a drug-addicted stranger, and do more to help her. Similarly, right-wingers tend to be more tolerant of their own govts harming foreigners than they are of foreign govts harming compatriots.
