But that's the problem. We shouldn't hold the left (nor America, nor the West) to a higher standard, since that which we deem universally good isn't exclusive to those groups. That sentiment results in excusing bad ideas & behavior.

Yes, there's the whole problem of the soft bigotry of low expectations, which many leftists are guilty of. But I think disparities in standards are ultimately unavoidable for humans; everyone favours their own friends and families over strangers, for instance.

I do that too (criticize more what I hold in higher regard) - but I think you are making a mistake in assuming most other people do the same.

My view is not devoid of caveats. The higher regard for the West often manifests as the soft bigotry of low expectations, or as taking Western liberties for granted. But most of all, it manifests as what I call the Tantalus Effect. I wrote about it here:https://rabbitholemag.com/how-progress-blinds-people-to-progress/ …

You’re a bright guy, and I appreciate a lot of your thinking. I disagree on this tho. Standards are culturally determined and are further subdivided by individual definitions. I think it’s clear that The far left has adopted an anti American position.

And I think it’s rooted in postmodernism and critical theory

Honestly, I feel like many leftists criticize the West so much purely because it's the only place they know anything about. Similarly, many on the right love the West so much exactly for the same reason. The only remedy for both is learning new languages, reading and travel.

I don't doubt that is the case for many, but the underlying philosophy of the growing self-loathing wing of progressivism is pure Noble Savage moral relativism.
