One of our most popular stories this year. "The overall result of cancel culture is the cannibalisation of the left and the strengthening of the right."https://rabbitholemag.com/the-leftist-case-against-cancel-culture/?fbclid=IwAR2w4wpzd78NfrrIEZO7CokCRHiqdGJF9ooUAr2shl7MBLaaTByCDtARXao …

Also, Epstein, Weinstein, Spacey and Lauer were more powerful than Bill Maher and were cancelled. Epstein and Weinstein exceedingly so. So I can’t concur with that portion of your otherwise incisive thesis.

The difference with those four is that they committed (or were believed to have committed) serious crimes. No human can expect to rape or sexually assault someone and not be ostracised as a result.

Can't concur with your reasoning here. To me, mob cancellation w/o due process is mob cancellation w/o due process. The comedian Ansari and the gamer who suicided were also accused of sexual assault.

Not to the same degree. Weinstein and Epstein's crimes (serial rape, sex trafficking) followed journo investigations and are on a whole other level to those of Ansari (not reading signals of discomfort during a date) et al. Spacey OTOH was exonerated (new film Gore out soon).

Is Gore coming out? Hadn't heard that. Still disagree--it's only a matter of degree. And I don't consider Frank Sinatra--I mean, Woody Allen's son--a journalist. And I consider even Epstein's and Weinstein's cancellations to be wrong--because they lack due-process.

Yes, agree. I'm not saying it was right. But it's understandable with Epstein & Weinstein as they were crimes committed over years so had a long trail of witnesses, receipts, etc, to such an extent that NYT or New Yorker didn't fear libel lawsuits from such powerful men.

Libel law, as you know, is not as strong here in US as it is in UK and AUS. The NYT and NYer raised their fingers to the Woke wind--betting that their overwhelmingly Woke readership, especially in case of NYer, would back them.
