If you find yourself losing patience with someone, remember that they are an ape adrift in an alien world, born into a struggle they did not choose, bullied by impulses they cannot control, searching for answers they will not find, and condemned to a fate they do not deserve.

Right but replacing 'they' with 'we'. Losing patience is also a impulse we cannot control through arguments for that same reason.

While losing patience cannot ultimately be controlled by us, it can be controlled by external factors, such as exposure to persuasive arguments.

I agree because it made me think, but I'm left wondering if whether or not we get exposure to persuasive arguments is also something that's largely a matter of fate.

It is. But we are ourselves part of fate and thus have a role in its fulfillment.

Appreciate the reply, but I'm massively confused about how fatalism isn't a direct implication of determinism. And if it is, then how would it not relegate us all as mere witnesses of fate playing out. (Just thinking aloud. I understand if you wouldn't have time to explain.)

Fatalism is a direct implication of determinism. But fate doesn't just operate *on* us; it also operates *through* us; we fulfill it with our actions. And we are fated to act as though we are free.

I think a lot of people find the idea of determinism disturbing due to the fear of not being in control, but as long as we remain unaware of what our fate is, and just get on with enjoying the experience of life, it's effectively the same as having no fate at all.

I think maybe I find it disturbing because I feel it implies I don't have a choice in whether or not I can "just get on with enjoying the experience of life" or in whether or not I find its idea disturbing to begin with. That that's all dictated by brain chemistry etc.

Go and eat some ice-cream. I suspect that the taste of it won't be tarnished by the knowledge that you were always going to eat it.
