The Great Buffoon @nntaleb blunders again; this time with the genetic fallacy. He’s using the Chesterton’s fence argument for religion while ignoring the fact that *needs change*. By his logic, we should never get rid of our umbilical cords because they were formed for a purpose.pic.twitter.com/nDxfpDAZvj

The idea that the longer something has been around, the more robust it must be.

Bad analogy. U cords get rid of themselves. Try the appendix. Better analogy. It was thought to be vestigial until only recently. You’d have called it useless and removed it w/o thought. Turns out it’s got a purpose.

Religions get rid of themselves, too.

It's a shame that the target is @BretWeinstein who's always offered a fair evolutionary take on the existence of religion as a set of metaphorical beliefs that aid survival

It's ironic that Taleb speaks so frequently of assessing people based on their actions rather than their "tawk", yet he consistently acts tyrannically, while accusing others of being tyrants for their (uncharitably interpreted) words.

What's more interesting is that, far from arguing thar it was vestigial or useless, Weinstein actually argues that religion evolved to help us survive and reproduce: it has biological roots. Taleb somehow misses this.

I think theres a good argument against using reason to break up the ethnic origins of civilisations that were made from wonder. That being said, Taleb is a spanner a lot of the time.

That religion should be reduced from being the means and end to knowledge to this indigenous tribal shawl weave pattern is so wonderful. I just wish they were equally against cultural appropriation!

Some people make soup out of U cords so after birth, they are still more useful and fulfilling than religion.
