I made a poll. You made a point. Big difference.

So we're clear, you're saying that there's no such thing as the rhetoric of what questions you choose to ask and how you ask them, and people should never be criticized for that in any way?

You can criticise the approach, by all means. But don't assume you know someone's motivations. That's where you made the mistake today.

I had to endure stones thrown at me by racists every day on a street corner on my way to school, so being called a racist makes me pretty angry, and I'm actually close to blocking you just on that alone.

I am truly sorry that you went through that and apologize for seeming to imply some deep racist motives on your part. But I do believe that the rhetoric of the "just-asking-questions" on that particular topic rests on racist assumptions.

I also think it's quite possible, even common for people to engage in it with the best of intentions! Which is why I try to be careful about what I argue/say when calling out the rhetoric.

But to be clear, you're referencing things like IQ studies and higher rates of criminality among people grouped together by self-reported race, right?

Roughly speaking, yes. I'm not as interested in whether significant population differences exist as I am in how people would react if they did exist.

But I don't think it's just a harmless thought experiment. I think many in your audience simply take it for granted those things are probably true and take your question as a sign that others out there do as well, something they can take comfort in.

Anyway, I won't preach your ear off and I apologize again for being brash, especially given what you've gone through. If you're interested in what I'm getting at, I develop it in more depth herehttps://sweettalkconversation.com/2016/09/25/rhetoric-and-due-diligence/ …
