”People want to be loved; failing that admired; failing that feared; failing that hated and despised. They want to evoke some sort of sentiment. The soul shudders before oblivion and seeks connection at any price.” Hjalmar Söderberg, Doctor Glas

Some people need to create & relieve the tension of conflict to achieve intimacy. It's a crude but common means of transient bonding. e.g. in aggressive male shit-talking followed by bro hugs, in family quarrels ending with crying & hugs & in bickering before makeup sex.

No but really this makes me sad and I want people trying to start fights with me on Twitter to DM me and tell me they're lonely and just need attention & love.

Lets hope it is only loneliness. This can also be what Kierkegaard described as the path of the "sickness unto death": the one clinging to resentment, despair, hatreds whose human contact is insulting/alienating others in the "hope" that it will be returned further isolating him.
