I suspect many are abusive online because they are lonely, and half-consciously hope you’ll respond to their insults by fighting with them, because that would be a validating acknowledgement of their existence. To the perpetually ignored, even a slap can feel like a caress.

Some people need to create & relieve the tension of conflict to achieve intimacy. It's a crude but common means of transient bonding. e.g. in aggressive male shit-talking followed by bro hugs, in family quarrels ending with crying & hugs & in bickering before makeup sex.

No but really this makes me sad and I want people trying to start fights with me on Twitter to DM me and tell me they're lonely and just need attention & love.

There's also the algorithmic take, that debate (good or bad) elevates an account's visibility. And the human side, that many more respond to unreasonable thoughts than reasoned ones. But a good, if not sad, point.

This is timely. I just dealt with the creepiest troll ever. Kept insulting me and demanding that I answer his questions while simultaneously accusing me of wasting his time because I am apparently unworthy of his attention. Then he posted a bunch of personal info about me...

Lets hope it is only loneliness. This can also be what Kierkegaard described as the path of the "sickness unto death": the one clinging to resentment, despair, hatreds whose human contact is insulting/alienating others in the "hope" that it will be returned further isolating him.

I had just that experience the other day. This dude was trolling me and a bunch of other people. He kept accusing *us* of being lonely and he acted cool and detached. Someone blocked him and the guy went ballistic, got really angry and even switched accts to stalk the blocker
