If seeing celebs handle backlashes on Twitter has taught me anything, it’s to never apologise to the baying mob. Not only will “sorry” not appease the masses, but, like the scent of blood to piranhas, it will drive them into a frenzy, and set them on you like a tornado of teeth.

100% accurate in my view. That seems to be a key lesson in Jon ronson's book on social media shamings too. And chimes with what I see - there is no forgiveness on offer for the contrite

Yes, to the angry villagers an apology is just an admission of guilt. It says a lot about their mentality.

Recently saw this in the case of two people who apologised for a genuine wrong - Sarah Dessen and Roxane Gay. All the responses were horrible, which made me sad - I had expected a doubling down, so an apology genuinely made me happy.

@KevinSpacey learned this the hard way. He should have hit back hard at Anthony Rapp and not played the disastrously-timed coming-out card. Like your tornado of teeth metaphor btw.

An intolerance for error is a defining characteristic of American culture. Politeness, courtesy, and humility are all seen as indecisive weakness. TFW "thank you" is viewed as an insult and a debasement of the self.

Backpedaling is usually intended as damage control, which may work in the short term. But in the long term it only makes matters worse.

I often assume they’re pressured to do so by the studios and networks they work for.
