“Change comes from within” is a bad heuristic for self-improvement. We evolved to adapt to environmental pressures, so if you wish to develop as a person, develop your surroundings into an environment that will require you to become who you wish to be.

I don't think(based on my limited understanding of this) that we have strong evidence *against* free will either. Why resort to such absolutism wrt free will vs determinism? I personally find myself leaning towards soft determinism/middle ground. Keeps me happier too!

*Libertarian* free will is quite illogical. It basically requires a belief in magic (i.e. a mind that can "cause itself").

You don't need to believe in free will for the rebuttal to work. Even if you were designing an non-sentient AI, you could imagine programming it to make determinations about choosing beneficial environmental factors that would be more auspicious causing feedback loops into its...

The "programming" that you speak of comes from a source external to it (i.e. you), and is thus environmental.

It has been proven empirically that behavior changes neural process. It does work to a great degree for alleviating many problems which wreck lives. I don't how many people have the ability to reshape their environment

If we have the ability to “wish to develop as a person" and the ability to "develop your surroundings into an environment that will require you to become who you wish to be", then change did indeed come from within. Any appeal to lack of free will undermines those abilities too.

1. Your metabolism slows down after the age of 40. True change from within. The lack of FW simply means you can’t blame yourself for your slowing metabolism. Similarly, the lack of FW only means you can’t take credit for the ability to change. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it.
-
2. Lack of FW means you can’t explain why you have the willpower to go to the gym on some days and not on others. It doesn’t mean you will never have the willpower to go or will not develop that willpower over time.
