Some points are hard to make in a single tweet. But Twitter conversations start branching wildly when we divide a single point into multiple tweets. Different threads get created for each tweet of the single point. Eventually we achieve dialectical incoherence.

And everyone goes away thinking the other person was evading (or had no answer for) some of their points.

I'm as guilty as anyone of causing this dynamic. Not sure what to do about it.

Twitter isn't built for discussions, which is why I don't engage in them on here. It only leads to frustration. A much better platform for conversations is @LetterWiki. If you feel you can have a fruitful conversation with someone, best invite them there.

I partly agree and partly disagree with this. I think there's a place for both kinds of conversations. At it's best Twitter facilitates more rapid cycles of dialectic. The downside of longer text-based conversations is confronting walls of text with dozens of points in them . . .

You still have the branching problem. (Though, you do also have the space to explain why you're ignoring some branches and pursuing others.) Twitter also allows more people to contribute facts, perspectives, and possibilities, making better use of the hive mind.

Letter seems much more deliberate, but also takes more time, and is less social. Using the two in tandem does seem like a way to create the best of both worlds, though.

True. Despite it's wonderful nature, limiting discussions to Letter would severely limit the number and diversity of interactions, to say nothing of their reach. There's a place for both.

In which case, James has a solution to his original problem. Use Twitter for the more casual exchanges of ideas, and if a conversation becomes too unwieldy, ask the interlocutor to take it to Letter. It'll provide cover against the accusations of evasion he spoke of.

We're currently working on an integration with Twitter: conversations on Letter link to the discussion on Twitter. Yes, that's my excellent sketch of the twitter bird.pic.twitter.com/8qFMalGSDp
