Google and Wikipedia have made research effortless. We can now find almost any answer within seconds. This gives us the impression we’re getting smarter, even while, without the need to any longer dig for information, our investigatory powers atrophy.

Devils Advocate here. Is it possible that this just allows us to investigate even deeper because information is available so quickly and ubiquitously?

Perhaps. I'd say it probably works like an amplifier, making the smart smarter and the dumb dumber.

I might have to write to you on letter about this. I spoke to @PsychPLockwood about this https://m.soundcloud.com/obaid-omer/dangerous-speech-ep-27-dr-patrick-lockwood … I also talked to @Ry_Nomad about it a bit.

Critical thinking is going down the toilet as well. People believe the first answer at the top of the search page and neglect to consider possible conflicting info from other sources.

As an engineer from a time before computer processing, it is even today a problem. When the processing results are completely trusted, huge errors can occur unchecked. This *often* leads to an escalation of compounded errors.

It’s only engineers with experience, & the ability to make isolated calculations by hand, to check, in isolation to verify the correctness of the results. If you are inexperienced you trust the results... remind you of anything similar?

What we lost is the serendipity of finding tangential info as part of the search, e.g. a much better book next on the shelf to the one we were looking for. That’s where brilliance comes from, serendipity. There is no serendipity on the internet. It’s all manipulated.

Not to say anything of the delusion that if the information is on Google or Wikipedia it is always correct or absolutely reliablel

Is it more, or less delusional than reliance on peers, leaders, authority figures?
