An obvious but overlooked way to determine whether you’re in an ideological bubble is to consider how often you read something you disagree with.

Good point, though need to distinguish between political opinions (e.g. "compromise needed on Brexit") and the blatantly untrue (e.g. "climate dhange not happening"). The 1st kind worth reading, the second not.

I think the second kind could be worth reading if it was written by someone credible (e.g. an eminent climate scientist). Even if it was written by a moron, however, it could still provide great insight into how morons think.

.. and there is also such a thing as too much. I filled my TL for a long time with people I disagreed with and it was just a horrible experience. It cripples the ability to build an idea to its potential. I think ideological self-reflection should be very rare but very sharp.

This is especially true when "the other side" can rarely execute cogent thinking, never mind being able to write well and actually convey thoughts that have some heft to them.

For a long time I've flirted with the idea of purposefully following people outside my 'norm ' for this exact reason. This was the needle that broke the camel's back. Now I'll do it!

In theory this is every time I open twitter. But that doesn't make me go "I'm so glad I'm not in an ideological bubble". Instead I go "Those people are crazy I'm so glad I'm not like them".

If you strongly disagree with it, having read it at all is now a significant moral failing. What would your peers think if they knew you read it?

Yeah this has been my dilemma too... Seems like there should be a balance though of trying to expand you're bubble and wasting your time/brain real estate on things though?

Trying to pop your bubble backfires too. You need uncomfortable voices that you understand and respect.
