Actually it is even weirder, you see first what you expect (from memory) than visual perceptions are used to verify your model matches reality. So the model is always there and the samples are taken to see if it's correct.

That's why you get tired quicker in new environments, the model is no longer sufficient and the brain needs to work harder to process all the new inputs.
