Try to listen without signalling agreement or disagreement, as even the subtlest feedback can interrupt the speaker’s thought process, compelling them to adjust their message to accommodate your reaction, and thereby distorting what they originally wanted to say.

Typically, the autonomic nervous system is activated with a fight-flight response when we signal a reaction to or interrupt other people's expressions. Introspecting on this reaction is useful in managing one's own cognitive biases & developing tolerance for negative emotion.

It is the absence of this performative dance that makes it possible to be honest on twitter and for some of us is liberating for the authenticity it facilitates. Unfortunately some people throw this away in exchange for anonymity because they think that provides a similar benefit

But is no reaction at all not also a form of signalling?

Well, a good speaker needs to gage his counterparts reaction to adjust the way he transmits his message.
