Appeal factor that depends on the individual disregarding fact and suspending rational thought is not actually appeal. It is delusion, and often results in self-harm or, worse yet, harm to others like their dependents.

Indeed. But when a community of people find something appealing, there's always an articulable appeal that can be studied and understood. Otherwise the appeal wouldn't be able to spread from mind to mind.
