I think it's wise to follow a few wingnuts discreetly as well. Always good to be aware of what the basketcases are up to. Though, if one does opt for this a hands-off strictly-observation approach is wiser still.

This is sound advice however these actions will not prevent you from seeing the tweets that those you follow like. As long those you follow, follow outrage, you too shall see it in your feed.

Agreed. I've always thought Facebook is for self agrandizement (making yourself look good to others) while Twitter is for self gratification. If you don't like what you see in your Twitter feed it's your own damn fault.
