Perfect encapsulation of a point widely missed: *Understanding* is not the same thing as *advocating for*. (aka the naturalistic fallacy) Indeed, we need to try to understand humanity’s worst motives, our ugliest behaviors, in order to have a better chance of minimizing them.https://twitter.com/mindrelic/status/1138499270162767873 …

Both you & Brett seem to be mischaracterising the criticisms of Brett's tweet. It's not that it advocated white nationalism, but that it gave the impression that white nationalism is all the fault of SJWs. It's a common cop out known as the soft bigotry of low expectations.

I might (sincerely) have missed the part in the thread where SJWs are blamed for all of white nationalism. Also, if the term hadn't been used this would seem like a distinct and separate issue.

Bret's tweet gives the impression that the would-be-racist would not become a white nationalist if only the SJWs didn't say such mean things, thus placing the responsibility for white nationalism on the left. It's like blaming ISIS on western foreign policy (i.e. a cop out).

Gives *you* the impression. I didn’t get that impression. This exemplifies the danger of over-generalizing our own subjective perceptions. I could just as easily characterize your words as “giving the impression” that you only wish to focus upon one side of the feedback loop.

But is that how you likely feel about what you’re saying? Probably not. Same goes for your lensed interpretation of Brett’s words. Part of what you see in his statement is merely a reflection of your own prior perceptions, yet you speak as if there’s only one interpretation.

Don't try to muddy the waters. Bret suggested the SJWs were driving young men to racism. Ergo, the men would not become racist if not for SJWs. Ergo, racism is the fault of SJWs. It's a denial of human agency.

Happy to engage further when you begin with something other than a baseless accusation based upon over-generalized and highly motivated interpretations.
