Perfect encapsulation of a point widely missed: *Understanding* is not the same thing as *advocating for*. (aka the naturalistic fallacy) Indeed, we need to try to understand humanity’s worst motives, our ugliest behaviors, in order to have a better chance of minimizing them.https://twitter.com/mindrelic/status/1138499270162767873 …

Everyone understands that Twitter's format strongly encourages brevity right up until they run into a tweet they'd rather misinterpret. Then it's like super obvious that the tweeter was "implying" something.

I took him 2 mean sumthing like 1)white tribalism is bad,2)identity politics can contribute 2 tribal formations based on race,3)racial tribes tend 2 treat other tribes as inferior,4)if race-based tribes treat whites as inferior,it stands 2 reason that white tribalism may increase

I agree that the way he says it does sound like the low expectations of SB argument. It is just a 'tribalism is bad, and it can lead to more intense tribalism' argument. I disagree w lowering the bar on wat we "should" expect of ppl. H/E,history may speak 2 wat we "could" expect

I would also be careful with trying to throw back "say mean things" at the Right. Both "sides" are not treated equally in the media and this has to be acknowledged. I have two white boys. Openly expressing hatred for their existence is completely acceptable.

Gives *you* the impression. I didn’t get that impression. This exemplifies the danger of over-generalizing our own subjective perceptions. I could just as easily characterize your words as “giving the impression” that you only wish to focus upon one side of the feedback loop.

But is that how you likely feel about what you’re saying? Probably not. Same goes for your lensed interpretation of Brett’s words. Part of what you see in his statement is merely a reflection of your own prior perceptions, yet you speak as if there’s only one interpretation.

That first sentence is not fair after the word "thus". The idea is that open hate towards this group will exacerbate the problem. Western foreign policy massively *affects* ISIS. I would not endorse that tweet as written but I don't think we're talking about fundamental causes.
