Debates can be won or lost, but are supposed to send the audience away with an increase in perspective from which they can reform their OWN arguments and opinions. thats not a negative thing, as you suggest here.

Do you watch American debates? They are neither illuminating nor entertaining anyone, except those incapable of understanding anything said. They just assume their side one and post clips, "my guy DESTROYS their guy!"

I think if a person approaches a debate with intellectual honesty it stays with them long after the fact. The tricks dissipate a bit and in the lengthy aftermath there's room to alter beliefs. Therefore, well worth it.
