I am willing to bet most really bad decisions were based on bad assumptions. We should base conclusions on facts, but assumptions are much more convenient. We're apes who can text and drive. The fact that we do both simultaneously, proves we ain't all that evolved.

We do it because it is convenient. We wouldn't go far if we had to look at a person de novo to assess his personality with every new action. This short cut is what underlies racialism and identify politics even if it is the sum total of our choices that defines a personality.
