Gurwinder can we get your take on whether reality shows like Love Island should be banned because some of the former contestants have committed suicide after the show and it can allegedly impact the self esteem of young girls watching it. Would a ban be unjust in a free society?

I'm certainly not a fan of such shows, but a ban would be heavy-handed, given that the suicide/episode ratio is miniscule. Much better to improve screening of participants; a thorough psych check and orientation procedure to ensure they're well-acquainted with the risks involved.

Isn't rationality clever insanity?

Good answer. But, if rationality isn't sanity, what is?

You are confusing the media-attention market with the market for actual ideas.

Aren't they ultimately the same thing?

Ideas now have to compete with entertainment for attention, just like science is being invaded by ideology.
