If others are just sharing in a purely mechanistic universe, wouldn't this just as easily justify our using them for food and textiles when we thought necessary?

Rejecting the idea of free will is not the same as rejecting the value of sentience. You can believe someone's existence is predetermined while also understanding that they are a living being who feels real sensations, and therefore shouldn't be made to suffer.

One problem I see is that it then trivialises the currency of ideas in discourse. In which case we abandon hope for our fellow humans because they're biologically determined to be as they are. This is wrong, free will & determism interact to give propensities which are variable.

Yep, as we do. It's amazing how much compassion you can muster when you don't stratify people on a scale from good to evil, and instead view them as a result of different environmental stimuli and genetic makeup that are not in their control (whatever that means).
