Tally of terrorist incidents by country since 1970, starkly illustrating the degree to which the invasion of Iraq led to it becoming the terrorism capital of the world. https://bit.ly/2DVvcLv  Data: Global Terrorism Database http://www.start.umd.edu/gtd pic.twitter.com/AWmBT1xmVo

Uh...where’s Israel? I kind of have to discount any analysis that doesn’t include them. They had 620 reported attacks in one month in 2015.

One month man. Not one year. They had well over 4,000 in 2015 alone.

Pakistan has a pretty meteoric rise in roughly same time period. No obvious or easy explanation. Multifaceted

Sure, there are many factors, but some are much more important than others. I'd say Pakistan's surge was largely due to rising tensions in Kashmir as well as it's status as the main stronghold of LeT and AQ & Taliban in the aftermath of the war in Afghanistan ("AfPak").

I need to see their criteria for definitions and where the set parameters- because to not have Afghanistan move up during the Soviet Afghan war is pretty glaring

Indirectly, to be sure. But the US withdrew in 2011, and that's when the explosion in terrorist events really took off. Another way of looking at it is that Saddam, and then the USA, sat on a powderkeg of ethnic conflict in Iraq that finally went off when neither was left.

...with a big helping hand from SA and Iran, who helped support their own factions in Iraq - Sunni vs. Shia vs. Kurd is probably overly simplistic, there's also tribal, religious, etc. faultlines that also come into account.

2/2: With all the duplicates & 'unknown' entries I seriously question GTD's efforts to use the PGIS database in their research without filtering out the obvious duplicates or 'useless' data.pic.twitter.com/eQwKSTCcxD
