I have never disagreed more with you than right now. Why do you think this?

N=1 observations don't do depression any justice. It's highly specific to the individual, including the causes, symptoms and treatment. Sure, adversity can build mental strength, but even then that also depends on the challenges and the person's ability to overcome them.

I'm sure people can relate to what you're saying, and on some level I agree with your point, but depression is far too broad and I think generalisations can inadvertently lead to further stigmatisation not only from non-sufferers, but to sufferers who do not fit this criteria.

It's very likely that beneath what you've labeled "comfort" there are real and deeply uncomfortable issues there to be had (and which may be causing the depression).
-
Being overly comfortable though makes it easy to avoid addressing those issues. Kinda of like what he is saying. Being challenged everyday is what works those figurative muscles.

I understand your context here to mean that absence of healthy life challenges is a trigger. Many who have had a fruitful working life & who retire with financial security suddenly feel without purpose, and the absence of positive challenges can be a trigger for this group too.

People with high IQ are often extremely critical of themselves. I suspect this is a way for you to not be compassionate towards yourself regarding this illness. If that’s true I’m sorry

“Based on what I’ve experienced and the circles I’ve moved in” - is definitely the universal gold standard for evidence-based medical theory. Think we can safely say you’ve solved this one, fella
