I've thought about that a lot, given my behavior genetics perspective (we're all just genes + experiences + random factors). I find it a more imaginatively compelling basis for compassion than the Golden Rule.

On the other hand, chaos theory suggests probabilistic effects at the quantum level could effect sensitive initial conditions leading to a different life outcome. In other words, I need to get off Twitter b/c I have a million chores to do around the house!

This is exactly like saying, "every single table is exactly what you would be if you were that table." Nothing, including empathy, follows from that.
