We're not configured to be happy. We're configured to believe we will be happy if we just accomplish the latest goal. So we seldom taste true joy, but we often pick up its scent—just enough to keep us in pursuit. Paradise is not a destination, or even a path, but a horizon.

I believe being in the presence of your own child and being truly present with them is the closest we come to pure joy. That's probably the most cliched thing I've ever written but it's profoundly true for me at least.

Having taken my 10 year old daughter to see Hamilton today, and watching her grin fom ear to ear for three hours straight, I agree with this.

We're naturally, as far as nature goes, configured to be alert and to fear. It's evident today and throughout history that our pursuits and nature are inspired by fear. There's hardly a moment where I'm not afraid. Hardly a week goes by where I'm not howling in the dark.

Methinks that we are configured to be happy in small increments. But we are socially conditioned to go for the big ultimate dream. So we land up in a state of reach far exceeding grasp. And that causes anguish.

I know this: the thought "if I get x, then I will be happy" is bound to bring unhappiness, even if x is acquired. Interstingly religious people are quite happy. Surrender to something higher than oneself seems necessary for "happiness".https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/religion-happy-atheism-psychology-faith-belief-emotion-mental-health-christianity-a8766376.html …

In caveman days, contentment was a death sentence. If you got comfortable, you got eaten, beaten, or froze out. The hustlers and strivers survived and passed genes to 2019. We have way more shit than we need, but not the sense to enjoy it.
