How much Heidegger have you read? I’ve read his Intro to Metaphysics, and it seemed like a very serious attempt to grapple with questions philosophers have contemplated for thousands of years.

I had to write an essay on Being & Time. I found the whole concept of dasein to be impenetrable obscurantist nonsense. But I'm happy to hear why you think it's not.

I haven't made it very far into B&T yet, but my view is that Dasein is very simple: just the kind of being that we humans have in the world. As opposed to animals, we are aware of our own mortality, and we can make choices that are more or less authentic.

Dasein certainly isn't that. If you'll allow me to parody-phrase Heidegger, it's something like "Being-as-is transcends being-as-was, for being-in-time is being-in-self, beyond which we are just being-at-large (dasein)."

Granted, the language is very ponderous and clunky, not very enjoyable to read. I think its more of an attempt to be overly precise than obscurantist though.

But for me there are very few topics more important than authentic being-in-the-world, so he at least gets props from me for tackling that. It is better to aim high and fall short than not even try.

How exactly does he tackle it, though? Give me one clear assertion he makes about "authentic being-in-the-world."

Here is a good resource: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/authenticity/#ConAut …

In a nutshell, it sounds like for H the normal condition is "falling" (just going with the herd), and to even have the possibility of authenticity, you must go through experiences of anxiety/aloneness, the reality of your own death, and awareness of responsibility for our life.

Again, that sounds like Kierkegaard. Without the profundity. Sorry if that sounds glib; I'm genuinely struggling to understand what unique contribution H has made to philosophy that is not just obscurantism.

I've got to go to bed, now, anyway. It's 1:15am here in the UK. But thanks for the conversation.
