I've just watched Star Trek #Discovery's latest episode "An Obol for Charon" (marvellous title). It was outstanding. I found this series very hard to like—although as a Trekkie I really wanted to like it. Well, now they have me. I was crying.

It was one of those episodes in which the main action around which it is structured is not that interesting & serves mainly as a backdrop to allow the characters' relationships with each other to develop in the way they only can in extremis.

Btw, another example of an episode like this is the DS9 episode "Starship Down"—a rather weak episode, but, like almost all the DS9 eps, enjoyable all the same. I helped review it as a guest on the @PenskyFile, a thoroughly enjoyable nergasm experience:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6GLQ2ebvUw …

But this was much more powerful as a standalone episode than "Starship Down." I was complaining before that the relationships between characters are not well developed. Well, now they sure are. Saru & Michael; Stamitz & Tilly.

And, of course, Michael & Spock. Saru's character was perfectly handled & the glimpses of his backstory absolutely intriguing. This is the kind of xenoanthropology we want! An very alien world whose inhabitants have an utterly different mindset, yet very fully, not imagined, but

hinted at. Just enough is left to the viewer's imagination. Saru topless was a beautiful achievement by the make-up artists concerned (wow). His quarters were a perfect little bijou microcosm of his home planet, an amuse bouche which promises a big fat meal later in the series.

Saru was the main focus of the episode & actor Doug Jones was magnificent. That was a big, theatrical, Shakespearian performance. But the subplot with Tilly & Stamitz was also very beautifully handled. I'm in love with @albinokid. That restrained soulfulness is mesmerising.

When they sing "Space Oddity," it struck exactly the right balance between sinister & touching. Suddenly I felt it: space travel isn't cozy. It's harsh, lonely & terrifying. I was reminded of this flight of fancy (from timestamp). @PhilosophyTubehttps://youtu.be/eQNw2FBdpyE?t=1417 …

Seriously, I need a whisky now. Also I want to hear your opinions. Who has been following Discovery? @calciferion, @glukianoff, @G_S_Bhogal, @jrdahlst? Also, you SHOULD be following Discovery: @SaritaAgerman, @LTF_01, @OtisManousakos. It's become worth it. Give me yr thoughts!

I'll always love TOS, TNG, DS9, but I kinda lost faith in ST after Enterprise and the nu-movies. As a result, I've given Discovery a wide berth. But, your words in this thread have gripped me like a tractor beam, and I now feel myself being pulled inexorably toward it...

I watched Enterprise sporadically but lost interest, hot Vulcan in a catsuit notwithstanding. The various series worked for me as long as they were going forward in time, advancing in technology.

Doing prequels sets up conflicts between the way advanced technology is portrayed in the various decades of production, which then creates continuity conflicts in fictional universe timelines.
