Agreed, but we have to be realistic. A preliminary study must be small to minimise disruption, and any small study of a large enterprise is going to be fraught with problems, due to the problem of scaling. Even so, we learn more from small experiments than from no experiments.
1) it’s an experiment with an end-date. People know a gap on their CV is not going to help them get hired after the experiment ends, 2) small communities don’t behave the same as large ones, let alone huge ones, 3) short term behavior does not necessarily equal long term behavior
