Freedom of speech is a hill I’m willing to die on, but one thing I dislike about the pro-free-speech crowd is that it’s filled with people who are really campaigning for freedom to be an asshole.

Not when you don’t control the subjective judgements of others - which we don’t. YOU might think my speech makes me an asshole - and others might not. I can’t control that. You might be wrong. You might even be the asshole, objecting to what I’m saying or how I’m saying it!

Yeah but don't tell me people choosing to use a trans person biological gender pronouns is not intending to offend and anger them.. Some people are provocateurs.

and there’s a clear objective difference between just objectionable and hate speech. The latter is directed at vulnerable groups of people.

It’s also possible to be an asshole without being objectionable. Just because people have the right to free speech and may produce horrible or racist or sexist speech, doesn’t mean you have to listen to it or let it affect you. They’re only words.
