This is the problem. As many have reminded me here, freedom of speech includes freedom to be an asshole. Unfortunately, this means that the freedom of speech movement will always attract assholes.

Does seem that there are not enough people who argue for it just on principle, as opposed to tactical self interest. I used to think 60's leftists were fighting for on principle - but now seems that was just gaining cultural hegemony in order to shut it down for everyone else

I think some people use freedom of speech as a shield so they can be racist, homophobic, etc. That's definitely a problem.

In your ideal world is the onus of proof on the defendant to prove the dead dude consented or does the state have to prove he did not consent? If the fight is not witnessed how would the police prove no consent.? Would the accused be expected to waive right to silence?

That's the point I'm making... It's the lack of free speech that's allowing the far-left's rhetoric to fly...because they're de-platforming and censoring those who are trying to debate their ideas. This is why free speech, true free speech, is extremely important...because (c)

authoritarians are always going to try and silence dissidence and the only fail-safe against that is free speech. They can't do it via the government, though it turns out that the government is actually behind the de-platforming online through mega-corporations, but the (c)
