Fwiw I think he'd have been very pleased to have inspired an original and perceptive thinker such as yourself.

I don't think he was wrong about Iraq, in terms of what was going on there and the need to remove a brutal dictator - how the 2nd Gulf war was handled (so many mistakes) isn't something I'll blame Hitchens for. He's still the closest thing I have to a hero.

At university, although I studied archaeology & ancient history, I liked debating stuff with the lawyers - many of whom were Iraqi and whose families (the ones not murdered or disappeared) had fled. I used to think they were overdoing the stories they told me about the brutality.

Saw Hitchens debating D'Souza in college. The difference between genius and sophistry was never more apparent.

The extent that he was wrong on Iraq was the extent that he believed that the politicians and generals had the stomach to stay the course. They didn't and the power vacuum following the toppling of the tyrant was not contained.

Such a dude, and such an untimely departure especially given the current climate. We can only dream about the Hitchslaps that might have been delivered...

John stewart owned him on iraq one time hitch was on. It was literally the only time I saw hitch lose a verbal exchange.
