Transference, and Counter-Transference. Society could really benefit from understanding this psychological process. Are we simply losing sight of who we are and blindly reenacting who our opponent is?

some tweeterfolk get even more enraged when you demonstrate you are even more moderate and less caricature than they tried to portray. They often abandon discussion then.

Yep. You can just sit and watch people take the bait in real time, and it nearly always works.

Why not apply a small village model. I’m stuck w these people, who are in some sense family, and worsening relations is something I’m just gonna have to reap later down the road. Use minimal force.

Construct fear to create polarization into “us” and “them”. Follow with an intense attack on centrists from both sides to empty that space. Then political compromise is not an option. Dehumanization is the result of the successful division. Then violence just awaits the spark.

A crucial distinction: This tactic is much more effective coming from the left than the right. The tea party called Obama a communist...and that's in-line with what you describe....but it doesn't produce the secondary assertion of your tweet. The re-enforcing defensive impulse.

Yeah that was back when the extreme left meant some sort of well intentioned even if doomed social economic model. Now extreme left is almost indistinguishable from extreme right. It's some thug with a club showing up at a Ben Shapiro gig to punch a few Nazis

Even setting the reinforcing defensive impulse aside, this tactic is very harmful because it feeds confirmation bias. Once one side believes the other is more extreme they subconsciously seek and find evidence to support that belief.
