You are being very generous, here, believing in their "actually expressed values". I think these preocupation with others feeling are not the real thing: force other to do what they want, coercitive power, is the real thing (I guess).

If otherwise, they'd don't be asking others to do/not to do something, but they'd be wondering how to prevent/minimise damages: but they usually want to constrain other people to do/not to do according what they want.

I often find it's a way of advertising your own high moral stance on a subject - "look at me - I am on this side and therefore superior to those who are not".

Its partially about status, and partially a silly confusion about doing the right thing. We just don't know what to do or say. Any true friend will just dispense with the nonsense of course

Right-wing orthodoxy isn’t a solution to the problem, though. I’m a heterodox liberal who often finds common cause with heterodox conservatives. We don’t want our worst, most authoritarian tribal leaders to take total control.
