Is this just not: scientific theories fall into disuse not because they are disproved but because those that propogate them die.

A more significant factor in a scientific theory's survival would probably be utility (which can be interpreted in many ways, e.g. financial, political, practical, epistemic). If a theory is useful enough, it will outlive its theoriser.

Compounded by the effects of ego, falling in love with one's own ideas, using rationalization as a tool to reinforce biases, jockeying for social/hierarchical status within a group ... Plays to certain temperaments. I think these conditions select for more radical partisan ideas

If we could get people to prioritize accuracy over tribal membership, it would get better, but as it essentially said, we aren't playing the truth game as much anymore. Instead there's this, "identity-protective cognition."

Or better polemic ability for that matter. I.e. someone who's spent years writing essays, opinion pieces, at debating clubs etc. will certainly be more eloquent with their political points and hence be more likely to win arguments. But that doesn't mean they're any more correct

The mistake is thinking intellect precludes human beings from succumbing to human nature. You can’t crush human nature, and all attempts to oppress rather than harness that nature lead to terrible outcomes.

I disagree. My scientific background has served me well in the disinformation age. I think a far larger number of scientists maintain objectivity better than the average citizen. However, you are right, if they do go tribal, they can lay out far more convincing bullshit.
