The long term costs of allowing the U.S. economy to be distorted by the policies of a hostile countries may be even higher, and are also paid for by the American consumer, something to think about.

While most people are distracted by the tariff war with China, Canadian steel and lumber has also been affected. Canada is not a hostile country, to my knowledge. In fact, it's a close ally last I checked.

The tariffs thing he's always on about I don't think is as stupid as you may think. It's largely ideological because he's pledged to do it and feels that following through proves he can be tough with the USA's largest geopolitical rival

And when he says make America rich again, he's talking about the nation as a whole (GDP etc) rather than the consumers which I doubt he cares about. And yes arguably GDP will benefit if he can get other nations to reduce tariffs on US goods
