Reminds me of that Chuck Klosterman essay on The Real World - he said (paraphrase) that the show initially embodied archetypes of people he knew, but gradually, people he knew started to seem like Real World characters

It's definitely spreading, but a cultural phenomenon mostly limited to (parts of) the west. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/headlines/canadians-polite-twitter-1.3395242 … Some parts of east asia are also still ok. If you can overcome your impulse to snark at their earnestness, you may have a chance to be happy.
