An outrageous betrayal: @Twitter CEO @jack proposes hiding everyone's follower counts.
Do you realize that tens of thousands of authors have spent millions of hours building up their followings because book publishers expect high follower counts?https://www.cnet.com/news/twitter-ceo-jack-dorsey-says-you-shouldnt-obsess-over-your-follower-count/ …

You put this far better than I did. Thank you.

But don’t the following credentialise influence better: 1. Number of books sold 2. Number of people clicking and reading your articles?
-
First-time authors don't have a sales record. Publishers can't get reliable numbers on total article clicks or reads across all sites. Twitter follower count is a good indicator of likely sales, & easy to check (plus, fake followers & high follower churn are easy to detect).

There would be nothing left but the "outrage" tweets
-
Seems even much of the outrage on Twitter is driven by the desire to increase follower counts.

Sounds like all upside. The people who are using Twitter to "build their brand" are the second worst set of people on here. (The worst are bluechecks who send their followers to destroy randos.)
-
I also don’t see it as a bad thing. You will still be followed if you’re a good quality tweeter, so I’m not sure what legitimate, non-outrage tweeters are worried about. Happy to be convinced otherwise.

One possible alternative outcome might be that followership will be more authentic with proper causality. Eg.
@naval or you@G_S_Bhogal have high counts because people like what you have to say and not that they like what you have to say because you have high counts

I rarely (okay, never) look at follower counts. I look at the quality of the tweet. If it's intelligent, informed, and based on facts, then I follow the person.

But they will still know how many followers they have. The reasoning I believe behind this is to try and course correct the youth in this country that tie their self worth to follower counts. Also, without follower counts, ideas will be judged more on their own merit as well
