I’m not an academic, so excuse my ignorance, but is there good reason to think this outcome is less to do with prejudice of other groups & more to do with the different ideas & values of groups?

Tricky question. Since the effects of contact are not as well understood as the Pettigrew study would have us believe, it's hard to draw any causal inferences. In any case, one could argue that prejudice is itself at least a partial function of the values and ideas of groups.
