You can’t win most Twitter debates because refuting someone’s assertion usually bruises their ego and motivates them to save face by constantly shifting goalposts until they can frame the debate in terms that “unrefutes” their point, perpetuating the disagreement indefinitely.

On the upside, you can find better people by noticing who is willing to concede a fair point. I've made online friends this way.

The goal in debating should be to learn more. Learning where you are wrong provides an opportunity to grow. Unfortunately, the above is not just limited to Twitter.

To the extent I ever have debates on Twitter, I assume that my opponent won't change their mind but that others who follow the thread may find what I write persuasive.

I see myself as winning a long term iteration of debates if I can absorb all perspectives; integrate them into a coherent worldview. if that worldview is challenged, I will scan for it in the system (already included), or I will accommodate it, thus “win” the long term game.

An egoistic way to express the process, but if one were tempted to use debate as ego flexing, might as well think long term & use this as a guiding principle... of course there are more noble reasons to apply this dialectic method.

Either that or they back away from the conversation and let their followers do the dragging. That way all the mean things they want to say still get said but they can claim their hands are clean.

Perhaps you can enjoy debates more if you rethink your expectations of what you hope to get out of them. I try to support my own current view in debates and I challenge views I don’t yet agree with, but I walk away from a good debate having learned a new way to look at something.
