Sometimes I hope for an alien invasion so people will realise that the culture war is pathetic and cast aside partisan posturing to unite in common humanity against a genuine threat. Then I remember that our environment is disintegrating around us while we call each other names.
The majority of people are not direct combatants in the culture war, but the most influential minorities (academics, media elites, celebrities, politicians) are. These people influence the minds of everyday people so the culture war is writ large (e.g. Brexit vs Remain).

You think most British politicians are into the more ludicrous aspects of the culture war though? Or even celebs? Seems to be more prominent in the US and Brits who spend too much time online

I think the fact that the country has been torn apart by Brexit shows that the ludicrous aspects of the culture have taken hold.
