You think many people care about the culture wars outside of the internet in the uk though?

The majority of people are not direct combatants in the culture war, but the most influential minorities (academics, media elites, celebrities, politicians) are. These people influence the minds of everyday people so the culture war is writ large (e.g. Brexit vs Remain).

The problem is that many aspects of the culture war aren’t petty bullshit that can be cast aside at a whim. Things like the mass disagreement over the acceptable scope of free speech are irreconcilable.

The issues are certainly not trivial; they do, after all, include the disintegration of the environment. But the bickering over the issues is largely trivial and does nothing to actually address them.

If we can't unite against thermonuclear weapons, I doubt that we'd unite against aliens. https://80000hours.org/podcast/episodes/daniel-ellsberg-doomsday-machines/ …

as an evolutionary psychologist I am sure you could posit some ideas for why humans might be more likely to unite against other living beings versus threat of nuclear?

An alien invasion would be the best way of developing a global consciousness. However it would not be some airy humanitarianism ethos but a militarist global form of nationalism.
