Another explanation is possible - there is a pattern of behavior, namely that people so consistently turn a blind eye towards excesses/stupidity/dishonesty from their own side, that makes it likely that you can correctly infer someone's sympathies from their criticisms.

Alternatively, people can be more concerned about flaws in their own side due to their wish to improve it. It's why I and many other former leftists tend to criticise the left more than the right - not because we consider it worse, but because we expect it to be better.

The drive to purity & doubling down on position are strange features/bugs of the human psyche. I think there must be evolutionary advantages to both that outweigh, or outweighed till now, their disadvantages. It seems like the disadvantages ought to outweigh these days; but...?

Yet another possibility (not necessarily saying it applies here) is an individual’s omni-directional contrarianism naturally results in the annoyance of whoever happens to be accosted by it.

Very true. I criticised a labour party guy the other day (very left wing) and was accused of being an upper middle class elite. Prob cos I have a doctorate. I'm from a poor working class family. I just happened to do well academically. Right wing say I'm a nieve lefty!

Flaws. No perfection. Even aspiring to be perfect is flawed. Ridicule everyone and everything. Especially ourselves. Civilisation got us into this mess. Nature will get us out of it.
