Here's another very interesting picture, post incarceration, in a fascinating short film. Find myself getting drawn in to Dadd's world!https://youtu.be/sOfVp8ifIlY

V interesting, thanks. I find it fascinating how insanity rarely hurts one's artistic ability.

I don't think that's true. Very few artists have worked while mad to any level. I can't off the top of my head think of anyone but Dadd.

Goya, Van Gogh, Chalepas, Wain, Munch, (arguably) Dali, just off the top of my head.

But these are all artists that had interludes, but worked while sane. And Dali just faked it up. Dadd did his work in the midst of his delusions.

That's not true. I named these artists because they produced artworks in the midst of their illnesses. As for Dali, you *might* be right that he was just exhibitionist, although one could argue that even if true, such exhibitionism could itself be considered a mental illness.

I suppose it will depend a lot on what we mean by mentally ill, here. I am assuming 'not lucid' like Dadd. It is true that many artists have produced great art during fits of depression.

And schizophrenia and many other conditions we would today describe as mental illness.

Schizophrenia, yes, but what great art has been made by a schizophrenic artist in the midst of delusion? I think it is very rare. Possibly the Book of Revelation, but what others?

It's interesting that you mention a work of literature, as links have been found between this field and schizophrenia: https://ki.se/en/news/link-between-creativity-and-mental-illness-confirmed …
