Well human beings organize themselves most efficiently for myths not for facts, rather they usually do so in opposition to facts, 'Homo deus' argues it most convincingly. Elections are times for creating myths!

I see this as the shard in the heart of democracy. Electorates don’t have the time or patience or intellect to recognise this, so parties overpromise themselves (and our politics) into oblivion. Incredible budget deficits being one obvious result.
