After he was cursed by Urvashi, Arjuna lost his masculinity and became his hijra alter-ego, Brihannala. His son, Aravan, also became a hijra, and even embarked on a romantic relationship with Krishna (as Mohini). Hence why hijras are sometimes called aravanis.
